Desperate Assad deceived those around him in last hours before stealthy flight from Syria

In a dramatic turn of events, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled the country in December 2024 as his regime crumbled under the pressure of advancing rebel forces. What followed was a sequence of secretive and deceptive actions by Assad, who kept those closest to him in the dark about his plans and escaped in the dead of night. As one of the longest-reigning leaders in the Arab world, Assad's sudden departure marked a turning point in Syria's brutal civil war, ending 24 years of authoritarian rule.

The Final Days of Assad’s Rule

For most of Assad’s inner circle, the end came without warning. Despite his public assurances that Russian military aid would soon arrive to stave off the rebel assault, the situation in Syria had deteriorated rapidly. Assad’s government forces were crumbling, particularly in key cities like Aleppo, where rebels had gained the upper hand. Behind the scenes, Assad was scrambling for outside help but was met with silence.

Assad had already turned to Russia for military support, but by late November, it became clear that Moscow was not willing to intervene directly in the conflict, focused instead on its own war in Ukraine. Similarly, Iran, Assad’s other key ally, made it clear that it could not provide immediate military relief. In fact, during a tense meeting with Iranian officials in December, Assad admitted that his forces were too weak to resist the opposition.

The Escape Plan

Hours before his escape, Assad assured his military commanders and aides that Russian help was on the way, even though he had already received a negative response from the Kremlin. His aides, along with his brother Maher, who commanded the elite 4th Armored Division, were left in the dark about Assad’s true intentions. He even told his presidential office manager that he was heading home after work, but instead made his way to the airport in the early hours of Sunday, December 8, 2024.

The escape itself was as secretive as the plans leading up to it. Assad boarded a plane from Damascus to Russia under the radar, switching off the aircraft's transponder to avoid detection. His wife, Asma, and their children were already waiting for him in Moscow, signaling the end of the Assad family's half-century rule over Syria.

In a startling twist, even Assad’s own family members were left behind. His cousins, Ehab and Eyad Makhlouf, were ambushed and attacked by rebels while attempting to flee to Lebanon. Ehab was killed, and Eyad was wounded, though the incident remains unconfirmed. Assad’s final exit signaled the collapse of the Assad dynasty and the end of the 13-year civil war in Syria.

A Desperate Search for Asylum

As Assad faced imminent defeat, he sought refuge in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, but was rejected. The UAE’s refusal to take him in was likely motivated by fears of international backlash, given the accusations against Assad for using chemical weapons during the war. With nowhere else to turn, Assad finally found refuge in Moscow, where Russian officials worked behind the scenes to facilitate his safe exit.

Assad’s escape was not without its complications. Russia, despite not being willing to intervene militarily in Syria, was eager to ensure Assad’s safety. Russian diplomats, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, played a key role in securing Assad’s departure, even coordinating with Turkey and Qatar to ensure a safe passage. Meanwhile, Assad’s flight was discreetly coordinated with rebel groups, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which allowed him to leave Syria without interference.

The End of an Era

Bashar al-Assad’s escape from Syria marks the end of a dark chapter in the country’s history. His 24-year reign, marked by authoritarian rule and brutal repression, culminated in a dramatic, stealthy departure. His flight to Moscow, accompanied by his immediate family, brought an abrupt end to the civil war and marked a significant shift in the region’s political landscape.

Assad’s exit was a combination of deception, failed alliances, and a lack of viable military options. His departure left his supporters to face the consequences of a regime that had long been characterized by violence and oppression. For many Syrians, the moment was bittersweet—ending one era of suffering, but uncertain about what would come next.

While Assad may have fled, the legacy of his rule and the ongoing struggles within Syria remain. The future of the country is now in the hands of those who once opposed him, and only time will tell what comes next for Syria and its people.
